Founded in 1986 and with a network of over 1000 alumni, the SVA MFA Computer Arts Department was the first MFA program in the USA to focus on computer art. Named one of the “Top Ten Digital Art Schools in the World” by ImagineFX magazine, the MFA Computer Arts program is also highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report and the Animation Career Review.

We emphasize creativity and a multidisciplinary approach to producing innovative animation, motion graphics and fine art. The first-year curriculum strengthens and broadens the student's knowledge and creative approach to digital art. The second year revolves around the thesis process—the completion of a significant new creative work.

We have had students from 34 countries, sharing their unique cultural perspectives. Graduates are employed by prestigious studios, exhibit works in museums and galleries, teach at higher education institutions or start their own businesses. Student films have been featured in hundreds of major international competitions including eight Student Academy Awards.

The MFA Computer Arts facilities consist of state-of-the-art computer labs, classrooms, audio/video production suites, equipment library, gaming lounge and digital fabrication studios. Students have 24/7 access to 4K video editing, 3D printing and virtual reality to assist their creative process.

We are located in the heart of New York City, in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood. The city offers a significantly enhanced cultural experience including music, theater, food, museums and of course world renowned art galleries. SVA shuttle bus run on the daily basis connecting our students with other SVA departments, offices, galleries, libraries and theatres across the city.
